Roberts Cabin Boreas Pass

We love camping during our gorgeous Colorado summers. But when the monsoon rains arrive it's awfully nice to sleep in a cozy cabin. Just like the Roberts Cabin on Boreas Pass!

Yes, it's sunny and gorgeous in that picture! Hooray!

Here's a shot looking out the front door the day before. Rain, fog, mist, and a tad below 40 degrees. (Yes, in August. This is the mountains, baby! We've snuggled through the same weather on the fourth of July before!)

This is the downstairs looking in the front door. Hidden off to the left is a double bed, and the wood stove is in the dark back corner.

Upstairs are three double beds, and one single.

Mattresses are covered in hygienic plastic, but we still wiped them off with our dryer sheets (bedbugs be gone!). We placed our sleeping bag as the bottom layer and snuggled under down-alternative comforters (very smash-able for packing, and very washable!) When we tent camp, this usually keeps us warm as the tent thinks its a refrigerator overnight, but it was too warm for this cozy cabin. We had a roaring fire in the wood stove that first, rainy night, but we let it die out before we even went to sleep and we stayed plenty warm. The second night we didn't even need the stove.

Those views at sunset! Nice, right?!

This is a beautifully restored cabin, but it is not remote. It is about 4 miles from Como up Boreas Pass Road. This road passes right in front of the cabin, and then curves behind the trees in the following pic to pass it again. So keep in mind, you will hear vehicles, and some of them will stop and want to check out the cabin. Either bring along something like caution tape to block off the entrance, or be prepared to make new friends.

WHAT TO BRING:
Water - There's no water at the cabin
Sleeping Bags and Blankets
Slippers - It's nice to leave your shoes at door and still keep your socks clean of Tony's droppings.
Trash Bag - Pack out all your trash. There are no garbage bins.
Caution Tape or equivalent

HINTS:
- The forest service keeps chopped and dry wood inside the cabin. Yay!
- Keep all food (even boxes and containers) in a hard-sided cooler. Tony the mouse has very sharp teeth, and is already pretty fat.
- Bring a tablecloth for the picnic table. We rolled it up and put it away every time we left the cabin, and at night. That way we knew Tony hadn't been dancing on it.
- There's an outhouse across the bridge. It's fully stocked with TP, locked so everyone passing by doesn't use it, and clean.
- The cute town of Como is only 4 miles away, but there are no services. To  find restaurants or groceries, you need to go to Fairplay (15 minutes), Buena Vista (50 minutes), or over Boreas Pass to Breckenridge (60 min).

Go HERE to reserve Roberts Cabin from the Forest Service. And have fun!
